Virtual Training- Recognize, Respond Refer—For The Disabilities Community
March 6 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Training Summary: Discuss the intersection of survivors with disabilities and how to recognize the signs of intimate partner abuse to best support survivors.
Training Description:
We often take for granted that able-bodied life can sometimes change in an instant, due to health complications, age, sudden injury, or late-onset diagnoses. Those within the disability community already must navigate a variety of challenges with accommodation and accessibility, not to mention advocating for invisible disabilities that may not immediately be seen or understood.
In honor of National Disability Awareness Month, we will highlight the intersection between survivors of domestic and intimate partner abuse and members of the disability community, which may increase the risk of coercive power and control an abuser or abusive caretaker has over a survivor. This training is focused on empowering participants with the knowledge to recognize the signs of domestic and intimate partner abuse specifically within the disability community, how to respond in a trauma-informed manner to survivors, and supportively refer survivors to resources that can help.
