The Women at the Table

Celebrating Women's History Month

Woman Article Portrait

Around This Table by Dora McQuade; click on the picture to learn more

In 1976, a small group of women in the Lehigh Valley gathered at the home of one of their own. Sitting around a kitchen table in the quiet of the evening, they shared their concerns about women in their communities who were experiencing abuse at home. They decided that they could help, that they would help, and that they could start with what they had.

From that kitchen table, May Day Anonymous was born. These women, overflowing with empathy and resolve, began answering hotline calls. From that kitchen table, they operated what became the first domestic violence helpline in the Lehigh Valley. After two years of steadfast dedication, the group secured nonprofit status and Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley came into being.

During Women’s History Month, we often (and rightly) celebrate the trailblazers: the bold innovators, the outspoken leaders, the women whose achievements changed the course of history. This year, we also want to honor the countless others: the women who gather around kitchen tables, in living rooms, in school parking lots, and in every informal space where community takes shape.

These are the women who have seen challenges in their communities and have stepped forward to create their own solutions. Women who have given hours of unpaid, often unseen labor, pouring their hearts, minds, and talents into making the world safer, kinder, and stronger; bit by bit, community by community.

Women’s history isn’t only found in textbooks, it's made every day.

Let’s continue to recognize it, celebrate it, and carry it forward.

ASK MS. G - March Questions

This month, our Ask Ms. G column tackled some real and vulnerable questions from youth:

  • “How do I tell them I don’t feel loved?”
  • “How do I stand up to difficult people without worrying what they’ll think?”
  • “How do you talk to girls?”

Have a question for Ms. G? Submit it on our website.

Understanding Brain Injury Among Survivors of Domestic and Intimate Partner Abuse

When most people think of domestic and intimate partner abuse, visible injuries often come to mind. But one of the most overlooked consequences of abuse is brain injury. Survivors can experience a brain injury from impacts to the head, shaking, or strangulation, injuries that are often invisible but can profoundly affect daily life.

Support our Spring-Cleaning Drive

Your choice to donate to our Spring-Cleaning Drive provides the resources for a fresh start. For a survivor moving into a new, independent home, essential cleaning supplies are powerful tools for reclaiming their space and defining it on their own terms. Your contribution removes a financial burden and restores a sense of autonomy and dignity during a critical time of transition. And remember, gift cards place decision-making power directly in survivors' hands so they can purchase everyday items.

Turning Point Opens New Counseling Space at CACLV in South Bethlehem

We’re excited to share some great news! Turning Point of Lehigh Valley has a new satellite counseling office at the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley’s Bethlehem location.
This new space helps us make support even more accessible for survivors of domestic and intimate partner abuse. By being right in the heart of Bethlehem—and partnering with CACLV—we’re able to offer safe, confidential counseling in a place that already feels familiar and welcoming to many in our community.
Our partnership with CACLV is all about working together to reduce barriers and meet people where they are. With their support, survivors in the Bethlehem area now have another convenient option for getting the help they need, when they need it.
We’re grateful for this collaboration and excited about what it means for the individuals and families we serve. Together, we’re building a safer, stronger Lehigh Valley.

Celebrating the Women Who Shape Our Lives and Standing with Those Who Need Us Most

For many survivors, every decision has been taken from them. Where they live. Who they speak to. How they move through the world.

At Turning Point of Lehigh Valley, we do not rescue. We empower. Through housing, advocacy, and support, survivors reclaim their voice and rebuild life on their own terms.

March is a time to celebrate the women who inspire us, mothers, daughters, sisters, mentors, and friends, as we recognize International Women’s Day. It is also a time to stand with women in our community who are working to rebuild their lives.

At Turning Point of Lehigh Valley, we witness the strength and resilience of survivors every day. With compassionate support, safe hoteling, counseling, and legal advocacy, survivors find hope and a path forward.

This month, we invite you to honor a special woman in your life by making a donation in her name.

A gift made in her honor extends strength and safety to someone who needs it right now. Your support ensures that when someone in the Lehigh Valley reaches out for help, Turning Point is there 24 hours a day.

Together, we can celebrate the women who shape our lives while helping survivors create their own turning point.

Driven By Choice. Defined By Impact.
