Shining a Light on Domestic Violence |
Domestic Violence Awareness Month |
|
|
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, honor survivors, and work toward safer communities.
Here in Pennsylvania, the numbers tell a powerful story:
• Over 1,500 lives lost to domestic violence, related incidents in the past decade.
• In 2024 alone, 106 individuals were killed; nearly 70% by a current or former partner, and two-thirds involved a firearm.
• In the last 10 years, more than 1,500 people in Pennsylvania died from domestic violence, including children, law enforcement, and innocent bystanders
• 37% of women and 30% of men in PA report experiencing intimate partner violence in their lifetime. |
| |
|
The numbers reflect the urgent need for resources, prevention education, and stronger protections, especially when it comes to firearms and youth relationship abuse. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community forever changed.
If you’re looking for ways to get involved this October, visit the DVAM section of our webpage to explore opportunities to participate. |

A significant portion of the funds we need to do our work with survivors is being held up as part of the state's budget impasse. We need our legislators to understand that real people are being impacted by the delay in passing the budget. |

Annual Survivor Vigil - October 30th |
|
What is Your Why? When we asked staff, volunteers, and community members what motivates them to take part in the Vigil, their answers spoke volumes:
“I never want anyone to feel alone
in what they’re going through.”
“It reminds me of the work we do and how sometimes it is lifesaving.” "The Vigil provides an opportunity to
see how much people care and are willing to come together.”
“I want to honor the victims who
have lost their lives and stand alongside those still on their journey.” “Listening to the speakers’ wisdom and encouragement is something I’ll never forget.” |
|
|
Why does this work matter to you? Why do you believe in standing together against domestic and intimate partner abuse? This year, we invite you to join us and reflect on your own “why.”
