How Unhealthy Relationships Impact Our Mental and Physical Health

Mental Health Awareness Month

Unhealthy relationships don’t just affect how we feel emotionally, they can impact our overall well-being. While feelings like hurt, confusion, or overwhelm are often the most noticeable, ongoing conflict, manipulation, or feeling unheard can also lead to anxiety, stress, and depression.

What we experience emotionally often shows up physically. Chronic stress from an unhealthy relationship can lead to headaches, fatigue, sleep issues, and changes in appetite. Some people may also experience stomach problems, muscle tension, or a weakened immune system. When the body stays in a constant state of stress, it can feel like always being on edge, making it harder to rest, focus, or feel safe.

That's why it’s important to pay attention to the signs. Relationships should feel supportive, safe, and respectful. Taking a moment to pause and check in with yourself, asking what you’re feeling and what your body is telling you, can help you recognize when something isn’t right and remind you to lean on support systems and tools that help you feel grounded.

ASK MS. G

This May, Here’s What Students Are Asking…

From wondering how to respond when someone disrespects you, to recognizing red flags, to supporting a friend in an unhealthy relationship.
• If he’s playing in my face, is it like “bad” bad, to play in his?
• What's the most common red flag you see?
• What should you do if you know your friend is in an unhealthy relationship?
Take a look at what students are asking this and some answers from Ms. G!

Urgent Call for Support: Help Us Care for Our Littlest Ones

Many of the survivors we serve are struggling to afford basic essentials for their young children. Items like diapers and wipes, have become a significant burden for them. Without these necessities, caregivers are forced to make impossible choices.

We are currently in critical need of the following items: Baby wipes, Diapers (sizes 4, 5, and 6), Pull-Ups (sizes 2T–3T, 3T–4T, and 4T–5T).

Donations can be dropped off at our location or purchased online and shipped directly to us. If you’re unable to donate items, sharing this message with your network is another powerful way to help.

This Mother’s Day, we honor women of impact; mothers and caregivers whose work often happens quietly, without recognition. Their days are filled with listening, teaching, comforting, planning, and solving problems. This unseen labor shapes families and strengthens our communities in lasting ways.

For many survivors of domestic violence, motherhood is an act of courage as well as love. These women work tirelessly to protect and support their children, even while facing fear, uncertainty, and change. Through their strength and determination, they show us that real impact is not always visible. Real impact can be found in persistence, care, and hope during difficult times.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate all women whose care makes a difference, even if it seems to go unnoticed. By honoring their labor, we recognize their value and recommit ourselves to creating a community where every woman and child are safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.
