We’re Retiring “How Was School?” Try These Questions Instead!
Have you ever wondered what happens in your child’s world while they’re at school? I think we all have. We want to hear about the exciting moments, the challenges, the friendships, and everything in between.
A new school year brings new backpacks, sharpened pencils, new teachers, and many new experiences. It can be exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming.
Children and teens may be wondering: Will I like my teacher? Will I make new friends? What if I get lost? These feelings are completely normal. Parents and caregivers can make the transition easier by creating simple routines at home. A consistent bedtime, reading together, and taking time to talk can help children feel prepared and supported.
But let’s be honest..when we ask, “How was school today?” we usually get the same quick answer:
“Good.”
And just like that, the conversation is over.
So, this school year, let’s retire “How was school?” and try questions that encourage our children to share more:
- What made you smile today?
- What was the best part of your day?
- What was something difficult about today?
- What did you learn that surprised you?
- Who did you spend time with?
- Did someone do something kind for you?
- Is there anything you wish had gone differently?
- What are you looking forward to tomorrow?
These conversations do not have to happen the moment your child gets home. Try asking during dinner, at bedtime, or while driving in the car. Learning does not stop when the school bell rings. Some of the most meaningful lessons happen at home during family dinners, bedtime stories, or car rides. Every conversation is a chance to understand your child, strengthen your bond, and help them feel supported throughout the school year.
