From Neighbors Opening Their Doors to Technology Opening New Pathways to Safety
Nearly 50 years ago, Turning Point of Lehigh Valley began providing services to people experiencing domestic violence. In those early days, there were no sophisticated systems, few legal protections for survivors, and limited public funding available to support this life-saving work.
What existed instead was a remarkable group of volunteers determined to help. They took turns answering crisis calls and opened their own homes to individuals and families seeking safety. Survivors fleeing abuse were offered meals, shelter, and compassionate support from neighbors who believed everyone deserved to live free from violence.
While much has changed since the 1970s, our mission remains the same.
Today, Turning Point serves more than 3,000 survivors each year throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley. The volunteer-driven approach that pioneered what we now call mobile advocacy has evolved to meet the realities of a modern world. Our advocates connect with survivors wherever they are through secure communication systems, encrypted technology, and a network of formalized community partnerships. A dedicated team of professional advocates provides safety planning, support, and resources across our region, while a small but committed development team works to secure the funding needed to sustain these critical services.
This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we are proud to recognize two Partner Sponsors, TierPoint and WIZE, whose support helps make this work possible.
